Our members form a growing network of people who live and/or work in Somerville and are committed to making Somerville a stronger, better, more affordable place to live.

SCC's members serve on committees, participate in organizing campaigns, attend our annual events, and get involved through many other ways. Although we welcome voluntary financial support, we do not require our members to pay dues.

Testimonials

"[Somerville Community Corporation's] SCC's 88 Wheatland Street project allowed me to stay in my lifelong hometown of Somerville."

George Manzelli, Jr., Wheatland Street resident

"When Cobble Hill Apartments had problems renewing the expiring-use contract with the owners, SCC came down and helped us out. We had meetings and they pulled us through. We're in low income senior housing, and could have been put out. We were saved by SCC."

Mary Ann Smith, Cobble Hill Apartments resident

"SCC has guided me to resources I didn't know existed, and showed me that I'm not alone. I was an individual who went from homeless, to having lots of issues, to being a realized individual, and eventually actually contributing to something larger than myself, which is this community. That's progress."

Mesa Antar, Sewall Street resident and participant in financial literacy courses

"It has been different working with SCC on the Temple Street Project than working with other [Community Development Corporations] CDCs because of the community organizing that SCC does. When there was initially opposition in the neighborhood to the development, SCC carefully worked with all their concerns and respected them. It's one of the few projects I can recall that we've done that was a new construction project and in the end all of the neighbors were happy. There wasn't any opposition to the project. I think that's a testament to the community organizing work that SCC does. That, and that it was so professionally managed - SCC staff is so responsive."

Neil Mongold, Narrow Gate Architects

"I'm proud to be involved with SCC because it's a group of people that come together seeking a win-win, mutually beneficial ways of building community. I think it's a way people reach beyond themselves and try to find some kind of common good which isn't that frequent these days. I've met lots of great individuals and been involved in some projects that are close to my heart."

Mary Jo Connolly, East Somerville Neighbors for Change member

"I'm proud of the smart-growth project that we've been working on with Groundwork Somerville, STEP, and the Somerville Health Agenda. The degree of collaboration that's happening for community-based planning for the Green Line stations and the Green Line path is really terrific. The groups have always talked to one another, but now we're really working together. SCC is the major player in providing this resource because of their position on displacement. We've never had this resource before and I think we're off to a really good start, even though we have a long way to go."

Ellin Reisner, Green Line Corridor Collaborator and East Somerville resident

"SCC is a terrific organization with the power to affect change. Since being involved with Thais DeMarco and the financial literacy classes, I've been able to set goals in my life that I previously felt were unattainable. Through SCC's assistance, I've gained so much confidence as well as a support network."

Marie Masse, financial literacy course participant
